About Technigel Consulting
Nigel Garnham is a highly
experienced principal technology consultant with over 30 years’
background in telecommunications and network engineering within IT
and Operational Technology (OT) product development, integration
and deployment programmes.
In proposition development, he has led product and business
technology teams to produce solutions delivered as part of major
engagements – including the development of broadband network
services, digital broadcast networks, multimedia contact centre and
PSTN (landline) replacement for the energy and utilities industries. He has worked as Technical
Design Authority with clients as diverse as the BBC, BT Group, UK
Water Companies, Civil Nuclear Industry, Devolved National
Governments, NHS Digital and National Savings and Investments.
As an independent consultant, Nigel now offers these services to
clients through Technigel Consulting Limited, undertaking the
role of independent trusted adviser for critical infrastructure
programmes focussed on the convergence of IT and OT.
Nigel has worked closely with client teams understanding the
processes and challenges of their organisation, with detailed
attention to requirements capture on both existing architectures
and required business outcomes. His
strategy proposals, which have resulted in major infrastructure
transformation programmes, have addressed the needs for
efficiency, business change, low carbon and end-customer
satisfaction. Highly
approachable, Nigel has a reputation for attention to detail and
pragmatism.
Within the context of Information Technology (IT), Nigel’s specialist areas have included
- data centre migration to cloud digital
applications (PaaS and SaaS)
- deployment of Software Defined Wide Area
Networks (SDWAN), delivered over fixed internet, cellular and
satellite networks and replacing costly legacy MPLS private
networks
- adapting local area networks away from
desk-based wired connectivity to AI-based wireless networks
using the latest cloud-managed mesh technology
- replacement of PABX and traditional meeting
room video and audio technologies with cloud-based collaboration
services, providing a consistent experience agnostic of location
and network delivery method
His strategy role in Atos resulted in him
driving the Operational Technology (OT) network vision through their global experts’ community,
including
- solutions and standards for edge networks, with strong focus on
the development of IoT and associated low power radio solutions
including LoRaWAN and NBIoT
- next generation 5G/6G LTE communications
- secure networks for industrial scale critical infrastructure
applications, including the adoption of remote control for SCADA
and increasing the granularity and frequency of remote measurement
in applications such as transmissions networks, transport,
electric vehicle charging and waste water monitoring
As a result, he is now equally as focussed on IT networks as he is
for OT solutions and works closely on emerging IT/OT convergence
strategy for energy and utilities infrastructure providers.
Nigel has provided consulting services covering regulated
cybersecurity aspects in these sectors and is familiar with UK NCSC
Security of Networks & Information Systems (NIS) Regulations and
IEC 62443 frameworks.
In his consulting work, Nigel has led major bids and procurement
activities under OJEU and orthodox programmes from PQQ right through
to vendor selection and due diligence.
Nigel is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of
Engineering and Technology and member of the IET's Academic
Accreditation Panel. He is Associate Editor, IoT and Cognitive
Networks, for the IET Smart
Cities journal.
